If you are a regular user of both Instagram and Facebook, it may be helpful to link your two accounts so that you can share content across both platforms more easily. But that may not always be the case. This guide shows how to unlink your accounts if you don’t want to have them connected anymore, as well as how to initially link them.

How to Unlink Facebook From Instagram on Android or iPhone
If you’ve decided you’d rather continue using Instagram and Facebook as separate entities, you can unlink the two quite easily. If you’re ready to break the bond, follow the instructions below.
Note: you can unlink the two accounts from either Instagram or Facebook.
Via Instagram
- Open the Instagram app (Android | iOS) on your phone.
- Tap on your profile picture in the lower-right corner of the display.
- Tap on the hamburger menu in the upper-right corner.
- Select “Settings and privacy.”
- Tap on “Accounts Center” at the top.
- Swipe to the bottom of the Accounts page and select “Accounts.”
- Tap the “Remove” button next to your Facebook account.
- Press “Remove account” to confirm.

How to Link Instagram Account to Your Facebook Profile
As with unlinking, you can link your Instagram account to Facebook from either end, using either the mobile applications or the Web versions.
Mobile
- In the mobile app (either Android or iOS), go to Account Center as shown above.
- Tap on the “Profiles” option at the top.
- Select “Add accounts.”
- Opt for the “Add Facebook account” option.
- Instagram will detect any Facebook accounts where you are logged in on the device, and will ask for permission to continue the process (if it’s your first time linking the accounts). If you haven’t previously logged in with a Facebook account, you’ll need to do so. Tap on “Continue” at the bottom.
- Select the Facebook account you want to add, and tap “Continue.”
- Hit the “Yes, finish adding” button to complete the process.
- Go back to the Accounts Center page, and tap on “Connected experiences.”
- Tap on the “Sharing across profiles” option.
- Select your Instagram account.
- Enable the two options at the bottom, “Your Instagram story” and “Your Instagram posts,” to automatically share Instagram content to your linked Facebook profile. Also, tap on “Your Instagram reels” to set up automatic sharing of your clips on the other network.
- Complete the same setup for Facebook so that whenever you post something on Facebook, it will automatically get posted on Instagram, too.
- Link the two accounts via Facebook by going to “Accounts Center -> Add accounts” as explained above to get the process started.

The process of linking your Instagram to your Facebook on desktop is relatively similar.
- Go to Accounts Center on Instagram in your browser, as instructed above.
- Click on “Add accounts” on the right.
- Select the “Add Facebook account” option.
- You’ll be asked whether you want to continue with that particular Facebook account if you’re already logged in on your browser. (If not, you’ll need to log in with your credentials.)
- Click on “Continue” to configure the two accounts together.
- Select “Yes, finish adding.”
- Once the two accounts are connected, return to the Accounts Center, and press on “Connected experiences -> Sharing across profiles” to enable automatic sharing from Instagram to Facebook.

How to Link Your Instagram DMs to Facebook Messenger
Once you’ve linked your two accounts, you can upgrade your direct messaging experience by connecting your Instagram DMs to Facebook Messenger.
Note: you can only do this through your mobile Instagram app.
- In the Instagram app, tap on the DM paper airplane icon in the upper-right corner.
- You will be greeted with a new screen that invites you to upgrade to Messenger. Tap on the “Update” button.
- This action will overhaul your overall DM experience and, at least in theory, should combine your contacts from the two apps so that you can message your Facebook friends directly from Instagram.
- Once the DM experience has been upgraded, the paper plane icon for messages on Instagram will turn into a bubble.
- If you don’t see this option in your DMs, try updating the Instagram app via the Google Play Store, then check again.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why can’t I access the Instagram – Facebook hybrid messaging experience?
It seems the feature is not yet available in all regions. While the option was launched back in September 2020, and Facebook mentioned plans to expand it globally, it’s still not available on a wider scale.
How can I share select Instagram posts to Facebook without enabling the auto feature?
You can toggle the “Share to Facebook” option from the “New Post” page on Instagram, but you’ll still need to link the two accounts before you can do that. As for Stories, there’s an “And Facebook Story” button that needs to be active for your Instagram Story to get posted on Facebook at the same time.
Can I connect other social accounts to Instagram?
Unfortunately, you can no longer connect other social accounts to Instagram. Previously, you were able to add accounts from apps like Twitter, Tumblr, Ameba, and OK.ru.
