The nocturnal veil continues to descend upon all our computer screens. Dark modes are being rolled out across apps, operating systems and web browsers to make our digital experiences easier on the eyes. WhatsApp is the latest big-name app to get in on a dark mode, but you’ll need to download the beta version to get it working.

Here we take you through all the steps to enable the dark mode in WhatsApp.

First of all, if you happen to be on the beta program for either the Android or iOS version of WhatsApp, then you’re good to go. Recent updates to the beta version will enable the dark mode.

For the rest of you, you’ll first need to manually download the APK for the latest WhatsApp beta version.

Once you’ve downloaded the APK, open it either through the browser or through your file manager. You may receive a notification saying that your browser or file manager isn’t allowed to install unknown apps. If this happens, click Settings then switch on “Allow from this source”.

Once you’ve done that, install the APK to overwrite your current WhatsApp version, then open WhatsApp. Click the menu icon -> Settings -> Chats then tap the new “Theme” option and select Dark.
