No matter how frequently you use your iPhone, you shouldn’t have to turn it off very often. Even if you are not going to use it for a few hours or a few days, you rarely need to turn it off. However, if you are not going to use your phone for more than a few days and want to save every ounce of battery life possible, shutting it down cannot hurt. The same can be said if you think your phone has a bug or an app will not open. Shutting it down could very well resolve those issues. How do you turn off a newer model of iPhone? Let’s take a look at all of the necessary steps.
How to Turn Off iPhone X and Later
As it stands today, the following steps all work for Apple’s most recent iPhones including the iPhone X and later. This includes the iPhone X, XR, iPhone 11/11 Pro/11 Pro Max and the recently announced iPhone 12/12 mini/12 Pro and 12 Max. For each of the aforementioned devices, there are a few different ways to completely shut off your iPhone.
Method 1:
1. Start by pressing and holding either of the two volume buttons (just one, not both) and the right-side power button simultaneously.
2. After holding down these buttons for a few seconds, a slider will appear on the screen.
3. Drag the slider to the right to power off your iPhone. Note that the iPhone can take a few moments to completely shut down.
Method 2:
1. This method relies on the settings menu (iOS 11 and later), so start by opening the iPhone settings app.
2. Go to General and start scrolling all the way down until you see text in blue labeled “Shut Down.” It’s at the very bottom of the menu.
3. Tap on “Shut Down,” and after a second or two, the same slider from Method 1 will appear. Go ahead and drag the slider to the right, and your iPhone will begin to power down.
How to Restart without Any Buttons
This method is really specific for anyone who has an iPhone with buttons that are not working or already using AssistiveTouch. Unfortunately, iOS 11 and later do not allow you to power the iPhone down using AssistiveTouch but they do allow you to restart the device.
1. Start by opening up the Settings app and head to “Settings -> Accessibility -> Touch.” Alternatively, you can also go to “Settings -> Accessibility -> Touch -> AssistiveTouch.” Finally, you can also turn on AssistiveTouch by saying “Hey Siri, turn on AssistiveTouch.”
2. Once AssistiveTouch is activated, tap on the slider next to AssistiveTouch, which then adds a touch-based home screen button on your iPhone.
3. Tap on the touch screen Home Button and then tap on “Device -> More -> Restart.”
While the AssistiveTouch method does not allow you to completely shut a device down, restarting is often the next best thing.
