How to Record the Screen with External Audio on iOS

Up until iOS 11, if you wanted to record your iPhone screen, your best bet was to connect your iPhone to your Mac and record its screen using Quicktime. That changed with iOS 11 when Apple released the new Screen Recording feature.

However, that screen-recording feature only records the system audio being played on the device while the video is being recorded. It doesn’t record the external audio from the microphone. Fortunately, there is a hidden setting in iOS to switch the audio input.

1. Open the Control Centre on your iOS device. To do this, if you’re using an iPad, iPhone X or newer device, simply swipe down from the top right of the screen.

On the other hand, if you’re using an older iPhone (with a home button), swipe up from the bottom of the screen. This will open Control Centre.

2. You should see the Screen Recording icon. Long-tap / Force-touch this icon.

3. This will reveal a menu to select the app you want to record. Below this, you’ll see the Microphone option which will be set to “Off” by default.

4. When you tap the Microphone, it should turn red, indicating he iOS device will start recording with the microphone on.

That’s it. When you start recording, you’ll automatically be able to record your screen with external audio from the microphone.

Using this option, you’re not limited to using only the device’s internal microphone. You can also connect your earbuds and use the in-line microphone to record the audio as well. The same applies to Bluetooth earbuds or headphones.
