How To Automatically Download Apple Music Songs on Your iOS Device

With a $9.99 subscription, you can now access millions of songs on Apple Music. The main selling point of Apple Music is that you can download songs for offline listening, which means your device doesn’t have to be online to listen to your music.

To download songs from Apple Music to your local device storage, you’ll need to individually select each album and download it, which can be quite time-consuming. A way around this is to turn on Automatic Downloads for Apple Music on your device, which as the name implies, will automatically download all Apple Music onto your iOS device. The option to enable “Automatic Downloads” is present in the Settings app on your iOS device:

1. Open up the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.

2. Scroll down and tap on “Music.”

3. Scroll down and turn on the toggle for “Automatic Downloads”

Once Automatic Downloads are on, any song you add to your library, either directly from your iOS/iPadOS device or from your Mac, will be automatically downloaded onto your device.

You’ll also find the option to “Optimize Storage” just above the Automatic Downloads option. We covered Apple’s Optimized Storage for Macs recently, which basically allows you to offload some of your less-used data to iCloud Drive. Shortcuts for the offloaded data are still present on your system, which is then re-downloaded in case you need to open and use it.

The same concept applies here in Apple Music. Your device will delete the songs that you rarely listen to from the local device storage, freeing up space for your usage. However, the songs will still remain in your library, and in case you want to listen to them, you can quickly download them or directly stream them from Apple Music. Although this solution may seem like an unnecessary hassle, it can be a huge benefit for those who have a device with limited storage.
