One of the advantages of true wireless earbuds is that you can put them on and listen to your music without any hassle. Some earbuds even come with a noise-cancellation feature that can block external noise so that you can work in absolute peace. However, there are instances where you want to listen to music and still be able to hear the surrounding noises. This is where open air headphones can come in handy. We had a chance to review the Mu6 Ring open air headphones. Are they suitable for you? Let’s find out.

What Are Open Air Headphones?

Open air headphones are a form of headphones where the speakers don’t go directly into your ear. They are positioned near to your ear instead, so you can listen to your music and still be aware of the surroundings. This type of headphones is particularly useful for sports, such as outdoor cycling or jogging, where it is important to be aware of the surrounding traffic.

Mu6 Ring Headphones Overview

How Mu6 Ring Works

Mu6 Ring headphones have a headband that you wear behind your head. The two tips of the headband are the speakers, which have hinges that can be rotated to position the speakers close to your ear. They support up to 120° of rotation so are easy to adjust, regardless of your head size.

The interior of the headband has a anti-slip mat to prevent it from slipping off your head. I used it for both jogging and cycling, and even when I was sweating profusely, the headphones still stayed snuggly on my head and didn’t move a bit.

Performance

There is only one long button on the right side of the headband, so it is easy to control. Long-press the button to turn it on. On the first power on, it will default to pairing mode. Simply turn on your phone’s Bluetooth, do a search, select “Mu6 Ring” from the list and it will pair immediately. The whole pairing process took less than five seconds. Once paired, you can place it on your head and enjoy your music.

The two ends of the long button allow you to control the volume of your music. A long-press will move to the next/last song. Pressing the middle of the button will play/pause the music; a double click will activate the voice assistant. In short, the navigation is pretty straightforward, and you will get used to it easily.

When in a quiet place, the music is quite audible at turned up to 50 percent volume. However, during my run, I found that I needed to turn up the volume to the 80 percent mark for my music to be heard clearly. Since the music is transmitting in open air, when the volume is high enough, those who are standing near you can hear buzzes and noises coming from the headphones. This is something you should take note of when turning up the volume.

Surprisingly, the call quality of the headphones is pretty good. During my ride, my wife was still able to hear me clearly, even though my surroundings were full of wind and traffic noises.

The battery life is pretty good. While the specifications state 10 hour of usage, I was using it on and off for close to eight hours before it required a charge. I think that is pretty impressive. A minor complaint, if I were to nitpick, would be the micro USB charging port. I would prefer it to be a USB-C port so that I don’t have to use an additional USB cable to charge it.

At 35g, it is also light enough that you won’t feel much of a weight on your head.

For the music quality, it is fine if you are not an audiophile. The music quality, though not great, is acceptable for use during sports. To clarify, the music quality is not exactly bad. It is loud and clear enough, like regular earphones, but it definitely can’t compare to the high-end headphones that cost multiple times more. During my jog, music quality is the least of my concerns, so these headphones are suitable for me. If you are planning to use this for strong bass music, I suggest you look elsewhere for better earbuds with bigger drivers.
