How to Remove Apps from the “Open With” List in Windows

In Windows 10 right-clicking on a file gives the “open with” option that allows you to select which application to use to open the selected file. Unfortunately, sometimes it gives the option to open files with apps that are not appropriate for the file. While this is not a grave issue, it can be a little irritating.

There is always, of course, the option of selecting what apps open certain file types by default. If, however, you prefer to remove some apps completely from the open with list, there is a workaround for this. This article will show you how to remove such apps from the list.

Removing apps from the “open with” list

There are two ways to go about this in Windows 10. The first is by editing the “open with” list from the registry editor, and the second is by using third-party software.

Using the Registry Editor

Just as a note of warning, I usually would not tamper with the registry editor unless I am absolutely sure I know what I am doing. It is best you back up your registry before you proceed. To use the registry editor method, follow the steps below.

1. On your Start menu type regedit, click on the registry editor menu and confirm the UAC prompt that is displayed.

2. Navigate or copy and paste the followinh path on the address bar of the registry editor and hit Enter.

Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\

In this location you will find all file extensions available on your Windows 10 computer.

3. Click on the extension you need for editing the “Open With” list, then select the “OpenWithList” folder. This will display all the apps it can be opened with on the right pane.

4. Right-click on any of the apps in the right pane and select “Delete.” Confirm.

You will have to go through this process for all file types whose open with list you wish to change.

Using Third Party Software

For this, download and run OpenWithView. It does not need to be installed, but it will need to be run with administrator privileges. This freeware is the easiest way to edit your “open with” list.

Once you run the program, it will display all the programs in the “open with” list.

To remove a program from the list, right-click on the intended program and select disable selected items. This will erase the program from the list of “open with” programs.

Using this freeware from Nirosoft is especially useful if you have apps that are crowding the “Open With” list, and you want to trim the list very quickly.

Conclusion

These two ways will help you remove apps from the “Open With” list. Using the Nirosoft freeware may be a fast way to trim the list. Other than being a fast way, it is also a safer way. You will be able to undo errors much easier using OpenWithView than errors made while in the Windows Registry Editor.
