Airdog X3 Air Purifier Review

Air quality is a major concern for many people. Health conditions like asthma and allergies can easily be impacted by the air we breathe, not to mention illnesses like COVID-19 are spread through air particles. Luckily, air purifiers like the Airdog X3 exist for this very reason.

The Airdog X3 claims to pack a lot of punch into a quiet, compact design. However, I wasn’t necessarily sold on their claims, so I tested the unit for myself. As you’ll read below, I soon learned that this little unit is well worth it, even with a price tag of $449.

Simple Unboxing & Setup

The Airdog X3 Air Purifier arrived well-packed but not in a wasteful way. The unit was encased in styrofoam within a cardboard box that was well-taped and secure. The tight packaging ensured the unit arrived undamaged, yet it was still easy to unpack.

The box contained three separate components: the main purifier unit, the reusable TPA filter, and the power adapter. Airdog also includes a user manual.

To set up the device, all I had to do was unbox the components, remove the back cover of the unit as listed in the user manual, and insert the TPA filter. Once I replaced the back cover, I could plug the air purifier in and turn it on.

The entire process took maybe five minutes, from unboxing to turning the device on.

The device itself is fairly small and lightweight, especially considering the amount of space it supposedly purifies. The unit is just 20 inches high and only weighs 11 pounds. It can easily fit in a corner of a room without taking up a lot of space. This small but mighty purifier can clean the air for 942 square feet, meaning a 30×30 room. For me, this means it can purify the air for an entire floor of my townhouse, which I found fairly impressive.

Basic Operation of the Airdog X3

As you’d expect, the Airdog X3 Air Purifier has one job: to clean your home’s air – and this small device packs in many features related to its operation.

Purification Speeds

The Airdog X3 can purify the air with four different purification speeds. This gives you complete control over your machine so that you can adapt the speed based on the situation. You can adjust these settings at any time by either short-pressing the power button on your unit or using the smartphone app.

As expected, the unit makes more noise when you set the purification speed higher. It never harms your hearing, but I found the highest two purification speeds quite noisy. For curiosity’s sake, I measured the decibel level for the highest purification speed and got readings between 60 and 70 dB. This level is compatible with a dishwasher, so just annoying enough to make it hard to talk over and impossible to fall asleep with.

Sleep Mode

One of the major selling points Airdog advertises for its X3 Air Purifier is its “quieter than a whisper” operation when set to Sleep Mode. In other words, you can toggle this setting on at night so that the unit doesn’t disrupt your sleep.

I tested the machine and set it up in my bedroom for a night. When I was ready to turn out the lights and rest, I turned the air purifier to sleep mode. I instantly noticed the machine grow quiet, and for a moment, I questioned whether the unit was even on. It did run through the night, and I never once noticed it.

That’s not to say I don’t think it worked during the night, as I did notice a significant difference in my congestion and phlegm levels when I woke up in the morning, compared to a typical morning without the Airdog X3. I personally believe that, even when set to sleep mode, the machine still does its job and purifies the air.

Auto vs. Manual

Finally, you have the option to set up your Airdog X3 to work in auto mode or manual mode. Auto mode simply means the machine operates at a purification speed it deems best based on the reading it gets from the air quality. Inversely, manual mode means you set the purification speed and must turn it up or down as you see fit. It’s easy to turn the auto mode on and off, but I found that auto mode made the most sense for me during most of my testing.

Control From Anywhere With Airdog App

As a tech-savvy individual, I love when new items for my home include Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connectivity and a smartphone app I can use to control the device. The Airdog X3 Air Purifier is no exception to this – you can download the AIrdog X app (Android | iOS) in just a few taps.

The connection process for the app is fairly straightforward. Also, the user manual contains a handy little flowchart that shows you what steps to take. In short, you must start with the air purifier turned off, then hold down the power button to turn it on and start the Wi-Fi search function. Once the Wi-Fi light on the air purifier is blinking, you can hop to the app and connect to your home network. The app will then configure with your unit.

Once I finished this process, I had access to controls and data for the Airdog X3 on my smartphone.

The Airdog X app lets you essentially control every aspect of your air purifier from your smartphone. You don’t even have to be connected to your home Wi-Fi network to do this – you can control it from anywhere.

Some controls you can perform within the Airdog X app include:

• Toggling the air purifier on and off
• Putting the unit to sleep or waking it
• Jumping between “auto” and “manual” modes
• Turning on or off the child lock feature
• Adjusting the fan speed of the purifier
• Programming automated timing for your unit

Additionally, the smartphone app gives you insights into the air quality of the room where the unit is located. It shows this data on a nice little timeline graph. You can review data for up to 15 days at a time. Simply scroll left and right to look at the chart from the main screen for your unit.

If you decide to purchase more than one Airdog unit, you can add more purifiers to the app. You can name each of them to differentiate between units, too. I could see this as a bonus in my three-story townhouse if I wanted to eventually purchase additional units for each floor.

Summary

I’ll be honest: I was skeptical about an air purifier that costs over $400 when there are units on Amazon for under $50. However, I feel like Airdog X3 is well worth the price. The unit has many settings, and the smartphone app is a great perk, especially for people who want to control devices in their homes, even when they’re away at work or school.

I think this air purifier will be a great addition to my home, and I can already see the benefits. It has already cut down on congestion levels for me and my children in the mornings, and I can already tell the reusable filter will pay for itself quickly.
