1. Launch the Home app on your iPhone.
2. Click on the house-shaped icon in the top-left corner of your iPhone’s screen. A drop-down menu should appear, letting you dive deeper into customizing your smart home.
3. Tap on “Home Settings,” then scroll down a bit until you see an item labeled “Software Update.” Tap to open it.
4. A new panel will slide in, and you’ll see that HomePod will automatically check for a new update. If a new update is found, you’ll get to see an overview of what’s new. To install that update, tap on “Update” or “Update All.” If your smart speaker is already up to date, you’ll see a message at the top of your screen confirming that no new updates are available.
5. While looking at this panel, pay attention to the list of devices you might see on the “Automatic Updates” list. This is where you’ll find your HomePod or HomePod Mini, along with a switch on the right side. By activating this switch, you’ll activate automatic updates and vice versa.
While we have your attention, here’s another tip: if you’re expecting an update to be released and wish to force-check, you can swipe your finger from the top of the “Software Update” panel. This will instruct the Home app to once again check Apple’s servers for the latest updates.
How to Know Whether Your HomePod Is Updating and How Long It Takes
We’d also like to note that software updates for Apple’s HomePod and HomePod Mini can be large. This especially applies to major updates that come out every autumn. Therefore, there’s no need to worry if your smart speaker takes some time to download and process the latest update (especially if you don’t have a fast Web connection).
Besides, your HomePod and/or HomePod Mini will display a rotating white light at the top of its touch panel. This will happen while the device is updating, which means it won’t be responsive until this process is done. And lastly, it’s crucial not to unplug your smart speaker, which may cause severe software errors.
